When I sit down to write these days, I find I crave absolute quiet to concentrate. Maybe it’s my age, but a blaring TV from another room, or a ding signaling I have incoming e-mail or a text/ring tone drives me to distraction. Literally. And if I’m yanked out of my imaginary world while in the process of forming critical words, well, picture this!
For that reason, I’m grateful I’m one of these (see below) and grew up when I did (the prehistoric era) and took Gregg shorthand back in the day. I fully acknowledge I cannot be trusted around a computer. It’s far too easy to look away for just a few seconds. Then what happens is the minute or two I meant to spend becomes an hour…or more.
I know software exists that times out a computer so people can’t log on to social media, check email, or the numerous other things that can mess with our concentration.
But, here’s the deal. Why should I take the time to download an app when I can easily pick up my pen and notebook, disappear into a quiet room, sans phone and computer, when I have the ability to do this?
People tell me they love the convenience of adding notes or a chart to their computer or smart phone, and that’s great.
As for me, I want to be connected up to a point. Until I don’t.
How about you? Are you okay with being perpetually connected? Or are you like me–feeling distracted–and once in a while crave your alone time?
